Causes of low sex libido in men
Testosterone is an important male hormone. In men, it’s mostly produced in the testicles. Testosterone is responsible for building muscles and bone mass and stimulating sperm production. Your testosterone levels also factor into your sex drive.
Taking certain medications can lower testosterone levels, which in turn may lead to low libido. For example, blood pressure medications like ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers may prevent ejaculation and erections.
Others include:
- Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
- Depression
- Chronic illness
- Aging
- Stress
Causes of low sex libido in women
These causes include both physical and psychological
depression
stress and overwork
anxiety
- hang-ups from childhood
- past sexual abuse or rape
- latent lesbianism
- serious relationship problems with your partner
- difficult living conditions, eg sharing a home with parents or parents-in-law
- Anaemia, which is quite common in women because of iron loss during periods .
- Alcoholism .
- Drug abuse.
- Major diseases, such as diabetes .
Generally, being overweight can kill your libido in more ways than one. Excessive body fat affects not only the production of both estrogen and testosterone (which help you get in the mood) but also decreases the amount of other chemicals your body needs to use those hormones. Which means your body doesn’t have the right hormones and can’t absorb the hormones it does have, often resulting to low sex drive in both men and women.
If you're bothered by your low desire for sex, talk to your doctor. The solution could be as simple as changing the type of antidepressant you take.
